Standing at 4,167 metres above sea level, Jbel Toubkal is the Atlas Mountains at their most elemental — a landscape of bare scree ridges, glacial valleys, and Berber villages unchanged for centuries, rising dramatically from the heat of Marrakech just 70 kilometres to the south.
The trek to Toubkal's summit is Morocco's most iconic mountain experience: accessible to fit, determined walkers without technical climbing experience, yet demanding enough to feel genuinely earned. The mountain itself is only part of the story. The journey through the High Atlas introduces travellers to a world of traditional agdals (communal mountain pastures), walnut groves above 2,000 metres, and a Berber culture that has shaped these valleys for millennia.
Sahara Trails pairs every trekker with a licensed Moroccan mountain guide — locally born, intimately familiar with the terrain, and able to share the cultural landscape that makes this trek something far beyond a simple altitude challenge.
Why the High Atlas
The Toubkal trek offers a rare combination: genuine altitude challenge, profound cultural immersion, and landscapes that shift dramatically with every hour of walking. Here is what makes this corner of Morocco irreplaceable.
Toubkal's 4,167-metre summit is the highest point across the entire continent north of the Sahara — a genuinely significant achievement, reached without technical equipment.
The Imlil valley and its surrounding villages — Aroumd, Sidi Chamharouch — are home to Amazigh Berber communities whose mountain traditions predate the arrival of Islam.
Combine mountain trekking with the Dades Valley's ancient pisé kasbahs, the Gorges du Dadès, and the Draa Valley palm-lined piste for a complete southern Morocco journey.
From walnut groves at 1,800m to Barbary macaque habitat and the bare scree of the summit plateau, the ecological zones crossed in a single day are extraordinary in their range.
All our guides are Ministry-certified, Imlil-born, and have summited Toubkal hundreds of times. They carry first-aid and altitude protocols — and they share stories the mountain demands.
The Atlas is a two-hour drive from Marrakech's souks — worlds apart in landscape and atmosphere. Day trips are possible; multi-day treks reveal what the medina cannot.
"You start in a valley of walnut trees and finish standing above the clouds with the Sahara visible to the south. It is one of those days that recalibrates everything you think you know about Morocco."

Every trek departs privately — your guide, your pace, your schedule. Choose the itinerary that suits your time and ambition, then let us tailor the details.
Jbel Toubkal Summit — 3 Days
The classic Toubkal circuit: ascend via the Mizane Valley to Nelter Refuge (3,207m) on day one, summit at dawn on day two with a return to the refuge, descend to Imlil on day three via the Azzadene Valley. Mornings from the summit platform reveal both the Atlas ridge and, on clear days, the Sahara horizon. Nights at the refuge are basic mountain accommodation — cold, memorable, and shared with fellow summit hopefuls from across the world.
- Licensed guide for full 3 days, private party
- Mountain mule for luggage carry to refuge
- 2 nights refuge accommodation (half board)
- Toubkal National Park entrance fee included
- Private 4×4 transfer Marrakech–Imlil–Marrakech
- Summit certificate issued on completion
Berber Village Trail — 4 Days
A slower, deeper journey through the Toubkal region — visiting Berber villages rarely touched by tourism: Aroumd, Amsouzart, Tacheddirt, and Tachedirt. Sleep in traditional gîtes with local families, share tagine dinners, walk between villages on ancient shepherd paths, and hear the call to prayer echo off granite walls. Toubkal is visible throughout; the summit is optional but possible on this itinerary.
- 4 days guided trek through traditional villages
- 3 nights in private gîte (local family accommodation)
- All meals included with host families
- Optional Toubkal summit day at no extra cost
- Visit Sidi Chamharouch sacred shrine
- Private guide + Marrakech transfers
Atlas & Dades Valley — 7 Days
Morocco's most dramatic vertical range in a single week: begin with the Toubkal summit attempt in the High Atlas, descend the southern slopes through the Tichka Pass, traverse the Valley of Roses (Kelaat M'Gouna), walk the Gorges du Dadès, and arrive at the Draa Valley's ancient kasbahs before a final night in the Sahara at Merzouga. From peak to dune in seven days — the full arc of Moroccan landscape.
- Toubkal summit trek (2 days) + Dades Valley drive (3 days)
- Sahara desert camp night at Erg Chebbi, Merzouga
- Camel trek at sunset to exclusive desert camp
- Visit Aït Benhaddou UNESCO kasbah
- Private 4×4 + driver throughout all 7 days
- Licensed mountain guide + desert guide
Imlil Valley Day Trek
For those unable to commit to a multi-day trek: a full-day private journey from Marrakech into the Imlil valley, walking to the village of Aroumd at 1,900 metres with Atlas panoramas on all sides. Lunch with a Berber family in their home. The route is steep enough to feel genuine; the views are exceptional. Back in Marrakech by evening.
- Private guide for full day, departure at 8am
- Imlil valley walk to Aroumd village (4–5 hrs)
- Traditional Berber lunch included
- Return transfer to Marrakech by 6pm
- Suitable for mixed-fitness groups and older travellers

From the Summit & Below
"I've climbed in the Alps and the Andes. Toubkal surprised me — the remoteness, the silence at the summit, the Berber culture woven into every kilometre. Hassan knew every family in every village. That's not a guide, that's a connection."
"We did the Berber village route — no summit, just walking. Four days sleeping in gîtes, eating with families, crossing passes with no one else in sight. The most human travel experience I've had in twenty years of hiking."
"Combined the Toubkal trek with a Sahara night — seven days from peak to dune. The Dades gorges alone were worth the trip. The guide team between the mountain and desert was seamless. One booking, two completely different Moroccos."
"Not a serious hiker — came for a day trek with my partner from Marrakech. The Imlil valley, the family lunch, the views above 2,000m. We've already booked the multi-day summit trek for next year. That day changed our travel plans entirely."

Frequently Asked Questions
How fit do I need to be to climb Jbel Toubkal? +
Toubkal is a strenuous high-altitude trek but requires no technical climbing skills. You should be comfortable walking 6–8 hours per day on steep, rocky terrain. If you can hike a long day in the hills at home with a daypack, you can attempt Toubkal. Our guides adjust pace to each group — we have summited with guests in their 60s and with first-time hikers. The key is preparation, not prior climbing experience.
What is the best time of year to trek in the High Atlas? +
April–June and September–October are optimal: stable weather, mild temperatures at altitude, and clear summit views. July and August are warm in the valleys but manageable with early morning starts. December to March sees snow above 3,000 metres — the summit is achievable but requires crampons and ice axes, and is recommended only for experienced winter trekkers. Spring and autumn bookings fill quickly, so earlier reservation is advisable.
Do I need a licensed guide to climb Toubkal? +
It is not legally required, but the route above the refuge becomes genuinely featureless in cloud or snow, and weather at altitude changes rapidly. All Sahara Trails mountain guides are licensed by Morocco's Ministry of Tourism, carry first-aid kits and altitude protocols, and have typically summited Toubkal several hundred times. The summit day also begins at 5am in darkness — knowing the route intimately matters. We strongly recommend against attempting the summit without a certified local guide.
Can the Atlas trek be combined with a Sahara desert tour? +
Yes — and this is one of our most-requested itineraries. The Atlas-to-Sahara route descends the southern slopes of the High Atlas, traverses the Dades Valley's rose-growing villages and ancient kasbahs, passes through the Draa Valley, and arrives at the Sahara dunes of Erg Chebbi for a desert camp night. Typically 7–10 days total with a private 4×4 handling all transfers between landscapes. The contrast — from snowfields to sand dunes within a week — is one of Morocco's most spectacular travel experiences.
What is the accommodation like on the mountain? +
The Toubkal summit trek uses Nelter Refuge at 3,207 metres — a mountain hut with dormitory beds, basic meals, and cold facilities. It is functional and social, not luxurious. The cultural village treks stay in traditional Berber gîtes — family-run guesthouses with private or shared rooms, tagine dinners, and mint tea by the fire. For those wishing to stay in a mountain lodge rather than a refuge, we can arrange the privately-owned Kasbah du Toubkal in Imlil, one of Africa's most acclaimed small hotels.
Is the trek suitable for families with children? +
Yes, with the right itinerary. The Imlil day trek and Berber village cultural routes are well-suited to families with children aged 8 and above. The Toubkal summit trek is demanding and recommended for ages 14+ with good fitness. Muleteers are available to carry younger children's packs and their enthusiasm for meeting the mountain mules is usually immediate. Our family-oriented guides adjust pace, content, and activity to keep younger travellers engaged throughout.
